A nicely balanced overview of some complex moments in American history. I appreciate your willingness to give credit where it’s due to certain white establishment figures, and it doesn’t hurt to remember that by modern standards they inevitably fell short in many ways. But when I see questions about whether something was done “with genuine intentions“, I can’t help remember the numerous other articles on Medium which say that impact, not intent, is the only thing that matters in these situations. if we are going to ignore intention when the impact is negative, we should also ignore it when the impact is positive. Eisenhower acted decisively and effectively, and got the morally necessary result. We don’t have a crystal ball to determine what his intentions were, and we shouldn’t care about them anyway.
