A word that outsiders use to describe a people is called an Exonym. "Eskimo" is an example, because the Eskimo languages have no word for Eskimo. They call themselves Inuits, Yupiks etc. to indicate their tribe, but they didn't see themselves as having anything in common with each until Outsiders came up with the word "Eskimo".

In other contexts, exonyms are considered offensive. The use of the word "Eskimo" may have been one reason that Seuss enterprises stopped publishing "McEllicotts Pool". "Latinx" has the dubious privilege of being an Exonym created by the Woke, instead of attacked by them.
