According to some animators I have seen interviewed, the white gloves are there merely because it is easier to draw gloved hands than ungloved hands. that's also why each character has only three fingers and a thumb on each hand. A minor point, of course. Obviously there were a lot of cartoons inspired by Minstrel shows, and they are horribly racist/
