American music has followed this cyclic pattern since the days of the minstrel shows in the nineteenth century: 1) African-Americans create a new style of music. Young white people love it, and their parents denounce the music as a tool of the devil. 2) Those young white people grow up and become parents. Black people stop playing that style of music and everybody now calls that music white people's music. 3) ) African-Americans create a new style of music. Young white people love it, and their parents denounce the music as a tool of the devil. And so on.
