Big Mama Thorton didn't write hound dog. It was written by Jerry Leiber, a Jewish white guy. Of course the Stones made far more money than any of the older generation bluesmen. But that wasn't their fault. It happened because they got arbitrarily selected as the group of cute young guys that teenage girls liked to scream at and dream about. That was partly because they were young, and yes partly because they were white. But the Stones did a lot to increase the fame and financial sucess of their black mentors to much greater than it was.
