Even today, most states permit you to do what is called “reading for the law“. That means studying the texts on your own, then taking the bar exam. If you pass, you’re a lawyer, whether you went to law school or not. Conversely, if you haven’t passed the bar exam, it’s illegal to represent anybody but yourself or your spouse in court.
