Here’s one form of mansplaining I have been guilty of. As we get older and uglier, we usually end up getting smarter, or at least more knowledgeable. That means if we can’t catch a woman’s attention with our looks, we try to do it by showing off how smart we are. That usually doesn’t work for sexual conquest anymore, (although there are young women with Geezer-filia who can be attracted to an old man simply because he’s smart.) But what most of want is for a pretty young woman to look at us with some interest for a few moments before she moves on to someone younger and better looking. Sometimes we try to capture that kind of interest by talking about what we know, and sometimes that works. Other times however, you end up being a tiresome old bore, or if the lady in question knows more about the topic than you do, you end up being rightly accused of mansplaining.

so, fellow geezers, if the lady you were trying to impress gives ANY indication that she knows something about the topic you are talking about, immediately ask her to tell you what she knows. Phrase everything you were going to say as a question and ask her whether it is true, within her experience. We are not peacocks, and in many cases the female of the species will be more attracted to you if you let her show you her bright plumage. And there’s also a good chance you might learn something from her.
