I agree. But I don’t think most African-Americans find the phrase offensive. The author of this article didn’t find it offensive until she heard a Black friend of hers say it was. She in effect gave up her vote in response to an argument by this friend which was in fact based on factual errors. maybe I’m wrong about this. Maybe a substantial number of African-Americans really are offended by that phrase. if that’s true I’ll stop using it. But the fact that the author was not offended by the phrase until she heard this bogus argument makes this seem unlikely to me.

I know the previous paragraph leaves open the very tricky question of how do you tell what the majority opinion is. I don’t have an answer that satisfies me. but I know the answer is much much greater than one.
