I am old enough to remember the times of which you speak, although I experienced the negative affects of racism only from the outside. The racism of my neighborhood was subtle and easily overlooked by those of us who were not its victims. But when my family drove down from Maryland to Florida to see my grandparents, we saw countless signs for whites only drinking fountains, hotels, restaurants etc. It felt like being in Nazi Germany, even back then.
