I don't know the exact number, but I am sure there are thousands of Asians who have grown up in the inner cities of America, who speak with African-American accents because that is the language they learned while growing up. Some of these people have been my students. It is the only way they know how to speak. What do you want them to do? Take classes from some sort of Henry Higgins figure, so they can learn how to speak so-called "standard" English? Or should they learn how to speak English with a Chinese or Japanese Accent? Perhaps you want them to go work in Laundries or Sushi restaurants as well?
The only way we will be able to fight against the damage done by marginalization is to break down the barriers between the marginalized and the privileged. The idea that there is something wrong with so-called "Cultural Appropriation" works against this process, because it strengthens the barriers between the marginalized and the privileged. This concept is not just mistaken. It is evil, and needs to be labeled as such.
If the woke revolution in courtesy is successful, we will all eventually become mixed both culturally and racially. The next generation of my family will be mostly racially mixed, and hopefully culturally mixed as well. It would be a terrible thing if they were marginalized because they were "cultural appropriators". I applaud Awkafina for giving culturally mixed people a face and a voice for the first time in Mainstream media. They (we) will eventually be the majority.
