I have a hunch that those people don't read BOOKS, but do spend a lot of time reading texts online. Often those texts are snippets taken from books, collections of "fun facts to know and tell" that pop up in their social media feeds. It takes very little mental discipline to read something like that, and I find it difficult to go back to books if I have been reading too much of that.

Also, these days I spend lots of time with talking books, and thus have managed to "read" lots of books I thought I would never have gotten around to. Don Quixote, Lots of Dickens (including cult classics like Martin Chuzzlewit), Gravity's Rainbow, Tristram Shandy, and everything by Jane Austen, whom I adore. (My two hour commute helped with this).

Admittedly, I sometimes space out while reading these, so maybe it isn't quite fair to say I read all of each book. But it made life a lot more fun while driving or doing dishes.
