I saw another article on medium (sorry I can't find the link) that said the problem was not hypocrisy, but the fact that modern churches are sincerely advocating for values that many people consider to be odious and hateful. According to a survey quoted in this article, the three biggest reasons that people left the church were homophobia, abortion rights, and Donald Trump. If you have friends who are gay, or are pro-choice, you are not going to want to affiliate with people who are homophobic and pro-forced birth. When the majority of Christians appear to be supporting a man whom you believe is a liar, an enemy of Democracy, an embezzler, an adulterer and a rapist, that is a good reason to abandon Christianity.
