I think in cases like this she has an internal dialogue along the lines of. "I'm old, I'm ugly, I'm poor, I have a shit job, Nothing will ever change for the better. And on top of all that, I have to serve and take orders from someone who isn't white, even though I'm white. I'm damned if I'll do that."
