I think the problem with segregated schools was that they were never "separate but equal". People who fought for integration wanted schools that were genuinely as good as the white schools, and they thought the only way to get that was to actually go to the white schools. As long as school funding is determined by local taxes, the poor, both black and white, will always have inferior schools. We need equal funding for all schools, and not punish children for having poor parents. In fact, schools for the poor should get more money, to make up for the fact that poor children get less access to other resources at home, probably have to work to support the family etc.
