I think we're in agreement on this one. White savior figures and/or White buddy figures are added to movies because they will increase their appeal to white audiences. This is why Green Book won the academy award over several other much better black films that year. ( My choice was "Sorry to Bother You", which wasn't even nominated.). This does not mean that "Green Book" was a bad film, or that the people who made it should be discouraged from making such films. It's just that films that have at least one major good White Guy in it are a lot more comfortable to watch for White Guys, which is why more white academy members will vote for them.
During an evening of watching White Guys behaving badly, White Guys want to be able to point to someone on screen and tell themselves 'if I were in that situation, I would have behaved like that guy." That's probably not true, but hopefully the chances of it being true are slightly increased after someone has seen the movie. That's why movies like that should be made. That doesn't mean they should be given Oscars over movies that are more unflinching in their portrayals of the black perspective on racial injustice.
