I thought it was a wonderful film, and that the white savior criticism is preposterous. This can be shown by the fact that other people criticized it as being a “Magic Negro” film, because the Black character helps the white character. Some people think that if a white character ever helps a black character, It’s a White Savior movie, and if a black character helps a white character, it’s a Magic Negro movie. In fact, this movie is not either, because there is a healthy reciprocal relationship where each one learns from the other, and the Black character is richly developed with a life of his own.
I think the nearest thing to a legitimate objection to the movie is based on two things:
1)Many people are tired of “white redemption” movies, built around bigots who see the errors of their ways, because they center the white character
2) there were several other movies that year which centered the black characters and deserved the best picture Oscar more. My personal first choice was Sorry to Bother You, which wasn’t even nominated. After that, I would’ve chosen Black Panther, and then Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, primarily as compensation because he should’ve won it earlier for several other films. Nobody really got mad at Green Book until it won the Oscar.
