If there was no basis to charge him federally, then Cohen would not have been convicted and imprisoned. He was convicted for doing what Trump told him to do. Cohen is guilty if and only if Trump is guilty. You can’t exonerate Trump without throwing out Cohen’s conviction, and no one has claimed that there is the slightest possibility of that happening.
