I’ll admit when I saw the title of this article, I never thought I would agree with its conclusion. But having read the background stories and comments from other black women, I see your point and agree with it. I was completely ignorant of these aspects of black women’s experiences, and I appreciate you setting me straight. It shows me once again that we privileged people really do need to listen extensively before we comment.

The first thing that came to mind to me was that the content and title of the book was more problematic than the cover image. Glad to see that we agree about that. I’ve read a lot of the essays in Colin Kaepernick’s project, and I think they are dangerously vague. None of them actually want to abolish police or prisons once you read the fine print, but they like playing games with inflammatory slogans. More on this here.

What we need to do is police the police, not abolish them. We need civilian review boards, elected by the people who live in the policed neighborhoods, who have the power to discipline and fire police who brutalize the community. More on this here.
