I'm just an old male teacher who listens to Taylor Swift to get a better sense of what the young women in my classes think and feel. Maybe I missed the whole point of the song, but I didn't interpret it as a put down on the other girl. I saw it as her admitting that this other girl had everything that most boys want and every girl would want to be. BUT--you ought to love me anyway, because we are friends, we like the same things, and have more in common with each other than you have with her. Relationships should not be built on commodities like beauty and popularity, but on emotional bonds and shared values. My years of experience (including 35 years of happy marriage) have taught me that both Taylor Swift and her protagonist are right about this.
