Liberal white People don’t think about their identities at all. We are the ones who don’t see color. We have since learned that this is not a compliment, but it should not be seen as an insult either. Those white men who think of themselves as white men see nothing but color, and by and large they are brainless Yahoos with more guns than teeth. We Liberal White People see ourselves as just being normal – the only people who don’t have an ethnicity at all. Everybody else is hyphenated, we are just people. That is ridiculous, of course, but that is the foundational assumption that makes white supremacy possible. That assumption is interpreted in different ways in different cultures and places. An Italian in Ethiopia is white, but not in 19th century America. That’s why Whiteness is not a culture the way African-American is a culture. It’s an arbitrary border that falsely claims that I have more in common with a Swede or a Lithuanian than I do with a Punjabi or Korean.

When I was young I used to wonder “how come all the other kids got ethnic groups and I didn’t? Why wasn’t I given one? I wasn’t born in a test tube.” In fact, I am Anglo-Saxon mostly, and maybe that’s why I like Shakespeare and Monty Python. But so what? That’s not a reason to carry a sign and march. Our most important contribution as a culture is the belief that Culture doesn’t matter. The idea behind the United States was that the thing that constitutes a nation is a constitution: A document, rather than blood and soil. That Anglo-Saxon Idea was heavily tainted with the White Racism that justified European Colonialism, but its essence contains the seeds for the destruction of whiteness.
