My readings of Plato and other classical sources prompted me to conclude that Socrates was black. He is frequently referred to as “snubnosed“, and Aristotle even uses “snubnosed” as his textbook example of an attribute or property. he also frequently swears “by the dog“ i.e. Egyptian god Anubis, and there are some sources who say that his mother was Egyptian. finally, just take a look at a statue of Socrates and imagine it with black skin. There’s no reason not to, as the images we have are white only because marble is white. With black skin, Socrates looks a lot like uncle Remus. If what this article says is true, the only reason we don’t have references to his blackness is that the Ancient Greeks just didn’t care about skin color. They were prejudiced against foreigners, whom they called barbarians, but that prejudice was based on language, not skin color.
