Nice thoughtful article, and just the kind of thinking we need right now. I think the problem is that we think of ethics as being a set of either/or decisions. Aristotle recognized that ethics is a matter of balancing between two extremes, and that every virtue becomes a vice if it goes to far in either direction.
But of course our current mindset would refuse to listen to Aristotle, because he once said that slavery could be OK in some circumstances, and was a probably a pedophile, like every other adult male in the Greece of his time.
