Psychopathy is a good metaphor for much of what is wrong with America today, but the problems you are talking about are not symptoms of actual clinical psychopathy. Real Psychopaths are incapable of feeling empathy for anyone other than themselves. (although they are often very good at using what is called cognitive empathy to manipulate the feelings of others). The American behavior you describe is people feeling no empathy for most of the human race, but these same people usually do feel empathy for the people in their immediate family. They look out for them, try to game the system so that their children can get special favors etc.

I used to think Dick Cheney was a psychopath until I learned about the numerous accommodations and sacrifices he made for his two daughters. (refusing to denounce gay marriage because his daughter was gay, for example.) No psychopath would care enough about another person to risk their own political career that way for someone else, even family. Consequently, I think we must conclude that Cheney is a clinically normal person who has made some truly evil choices. His daughters, inspired by his loving example, have become every bit as evil in their political activities. Most of the evil you describe in this article is like that: Not "Screw you, I've got mine" but "Screw you, we've got ours".
