Thanks for these facts. They do give me a broader perspective on the situation. I think that some of what you are saying about the biggest black stars is guilty of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. If you are going to become #1 you have to appeal to all sorts of people, black and white. So the most popular groups will be by definition by “more pop than the sound of blackness”.
