That quote is the ultimate clueless privileged white guy review. It never seems to occur to him that the 90% of movies about middle class white guys are every bit as limited in scope as movies about Asian Canadians girls. It’s one of the very few movies that actually fails the reverse Bechdal test i.e. there are no scenes in which two men talk to each other about something other than the women in their lives. This gives it a perspective which makes it very fresh and exciting. I personally am tired of seeing movies about white guys, and I’m glad to see so many movies going into other territory.
That’s precisely why I am furious that this review was banned. This clueless comment is a perfect starting place for a discussion about the limits of a privileged perspective. That perspective needs to be analyzed, rejected, and ridiculed, and you can’t effectively do any of those things if the perspective is not clearly expressed in a form similar to this.
