The Grameen bank in Bangladesh quickly discovered that their pioneering use of micro capital was most effective when the money was lent to women. Men were far more likely to spend the money on themselves, often for alcohol. The women would spend money on the family first, and we’re more likely to think about long range needs than immediate gratifications. Consequently, almost all of their micro capital loans went to groups of women, and these loans had a far lower default rate than loans given to men in the West who supposedly had good credit ratings.
