The moderate/progressive dichotomy doesn’t really capture the way the country is divided. Almost everyone wants government sponsored health insurance and free or affordable college education. Almost no one wants to radically rebuild the language to “woke” specifications, cancel people who once wore black face, let trans women compete against cis women, let people riot in the name of BLM, or abolish/defund the police. The progressive left social programs have a wide level of support, but the latter changes, which Ruy Teixeira calls the cultural left, have little or no support. Republicans have kept the Democrats out of power by tying them to the cultural left, and thus have effectively blocked the programs of the progressive left.
