The public option made it through the house, but was vetoed by Joe Lieberman, who came from a state that relied heavily on the insurance business. There was no way Obama could have changed the selfish position he took on this. If the Democrats had agreed to abolish the filibuster, they could have passed the public option without Lieberman‘s vote. But the Senate Democrats were not willing to do that.
