The quote you have highlighted actually proves the opposite of what you and this author thinks it proves. If you are privileged enough, you can treat your vote as a pure form of self expression, and not worry about the consequences of that vote. You call tell yourself "My vote is a pure expression of how I feel, and that's all that matters". If you are marginalized, however, you will suffer if one of the candidates will take away your right to choose or not choose pregnancy, or deport your relatives, or destroy the economy and make it impossible for you to get a job, or refuses to leave office when he loses. So sure, express your level of privilege by choosing a boutique candidate who is way cooler than anybody else's. It's fun being so privileged you don't have to worry about the impact of your vote on the rest of the world.
