There is a story in Boccaccio's Decameron that is almost exactly the story of Romeo and Juliet. I think that is probably the most likely source that Shakespeare used, given that he got several other plots from the Decameron, including Measure for Measure. Perhaps Boccaccio got his story from the source you described here, although I don't know whether that is possible chronologically.
