There are at least 20 passages in the Koran which insist that there should be no compulsion in matters of religion. The threats of hellfire in the Koran are against apostates, not infidels. There is a passage in the Koran which says that followers of other religions can enter paradise if they follow the teachings of those religions. And although there have been a few Islamic leaders who practiced forced conversion, the vast majority of Islamic leaders have tolerated other religions. That's why Islam has fewer adherents than Christianity today: because Christian leaders forcibly convert those they conquer, and Islamic leaders usually don't.
