Warren did not identify as partly Native American because she made up a cute story for herself. It was because her grandparents rejected her mother as being Native American. This was a real dispute that divided her family for decades, forcing her parents to elope without the family’s blessing. Warren’s need to confront this prejudice inspired her to become one of the most influential advocates for Native American rights, co-authoring and sponsoring numerous bills that benefitted tribal communities.
