Yes, but those people were extraordinarily morally perceptive and courageous, and today that position is just ordinary common sense and decency. Consequently we must judge both them and Us by different moral standards. My guess is that Donald Trump doesn't own any slaves, but that doesn't make him the moral equal of someone who opposed slavery in the 19th century. Conversely, someone who owned slaves today would be a psychopath. but we can't make that judgment about someone who owned slaves in the 19th century. I discuss this further here.
