You can’t know that this is true, even for your progressive friends, and you certainly can’t know that for people you have never met. The logical assumption, made by people who object to “Latinx”, is that eventually people will get penalized for using “Latino”. Try using the word “Negro” almost anywhere today, and you’ll see why both Latinos and Anglos make that assumption. Even in this article, you are accusing Latinos who refuse to use “Latinx” as being dupes of white racism who have “fallen for rhetoric”. Grant them the dignity of recognizing that they are rejecting the word because they don’t want some smarty-pants college prof telling them how they should refer to themselves.

On the other hand, your description of Governor Huckabee Sanders motives is spot on. Banning the word is every bit as misguided as creating it, and motivated only by the desire to use wokeness as a Republican weapon. The word should be left alone to die a natural death, a well-intentioned mistake that has no significant reason for existence.
